Tackling the Ironman 70.3 For The First Time!
April 25th 2020. By Workout Depot.
On the 23rd September 2018, siblings Lawrence and Elle Todd took part in the Ironman 70.3 in Weymouth. They documented their journeys through their fitness Instagram account, @Todds_in_training, and continue to regularly post their more recent fitness ventures.
A few months before the pair ran in the race, we were lucky enough to briefly sit down with them and discuss their training, and what else was involved in preparing for the race.
What Is The Ironman 70.3?
L: It is in essence, a massive triathlon. It consists of a 1.2mile swim, a 56mile bike, and a 13.1mile run.
E: It’s all done under one gun. So all aspects of the race are one after the other. You swim, get out the sea and onto a bike, off the bike and run.
What Was Your Main Reason(s) Behind Wanting To Take Part In The Ironman70.3?
E: I’ve been strength training for about 4 years, Lawrence a little longer than myself. We both became a little disillusioned with our training, so it’s nice to give us both something to actually work towards.
What Does Your Training Consist Of?
E: We started training properly in September 2018. We incorporated strength training into a programme in order to not lose any progress we had already obtained.
L: It would honestly be easier to do the training without the strength sessions, but we would end up losing the majority of what muscle we’ve gotten through strength training in the past.
E: We’re following a programme;
MONDAY – Swim & Strength session
TUESDAY – Rest day
WEDNESDAY – Long run & swim
THURSDAY – Strength session
FRIDAY – Rest day
SATURDAY – Long cycle & short run
SUNDAY – Short cycle & long run
L: We both most enjoy the strength sessions I think, and the hardest part is probably the running.
Are you looking forward to the Ironman?!
E: We will have been training for so long, it will be so nice for it all to pay off.
L: It will be 8months of training by the time of the race, so it will be interesting to see how it all ends.
E: I also feel almost a bit sad that it will be the end of the journey.
L: I’m interested to see how much progress we can make between now and then as well… I remember Elle couldn’t do a 9 mile run before, and now we do that every weekend.
